Highlights from the past week:

We ran a bit of the New York Times review of Peter Handke’s latest book, which wasn’t nearly as interesting as the fiction roundup

NPR featured Thomas Bernhard’s The Loser as a You Must Read This pick;

We found some interesting info about a predecessor to Sebald (W. G. that is, not Alice) and a couple critical books about his work;

E. J. reviewed Dai Vaughan’s latest;

Bulgakov got some nice attention in The Guardian this week;

The new came out, as did the second part of the Summer issue of

NASCAR and the 27% of Americans who don’t read books made me cry;

And, of course, the LongPen made its regular weekly appearance;

Highlights from this week:

The swept the Milwaukee Brewers, and as of this morning, are only 2.5 games out of first. This has absolutely nothing to do with international literature;

We took a look at the Espresso Book Machine (Frankenstein machine prints books!), gave a bit of love to DailyLit (not everyone’s a fan), pointed out some Google scanning issues, and hated on the LongPen (twice) and HarperCollins

E.J. was officially made a Heartthrob

For obvious reasons, India and Pakistan were in the news a lot this week, and we included several articles on the literature from both countries;

The German Book Prize was announced;

Our reviews for the week were of Merce Rodoreda’s A Broken Mirror, and Isaac Rosa’s Another Damn Novel about the Spanish Civil War!

And speaking of exclamation points, a book definitely worth noting is Mark Binelli’s Sacco and Vanzetti Must Die!.

Hightlights from this week on Three Percent:

Industry-wide, the big news of the week was the Booker longlist, which has been described as “quiet”;

Stuff finally came out from Dalkey Archive. Namely, the Spring 2007 D.A. Annual issue of RCF came out (disappointing), as did CONTEXT 20

Speaking of CONTEXT 20, it contains a decent article by Michael Pinker on Witold Gombrowicz, an author everyone should read

Thanks to an article by Tabish Khair, we were able to talk a bit about how magical realism has taken an aesthetic downturn of sorts;

The Espresso Book Machine was back on the site this week, thanks to an article in the NY Times;

And we let the LongPen technological innovation out to rewrite the publishing rules—make itself look silly and green;

No one has named an author from Brunei, proving something about something;

ArteEast has a special focus on Iranian Persian Literature, and is well worth exploring;

In online mag news, Bomb is making a lot of its past content available online for free, and the August issue of Words Without Borders is now available;

E.J. Van Lanen brought us reviews of Jose Eduardo Agualusa’s The Book of Chameleons and Lars Saabye Christensen’s The Model.

And most importantly, we learned about Google Trends.

Highlights from this week on Three Percent:

We raved about the ever-fascinating , especially UbuWeb Radio and the Dali movie homage to Raymond Roussel;

One of my all-time favorite TV shows is Lost, and I gleefully fed my favorite addiction by posting the new Dharma video, which first aired appeared at ComicCon;

A couple reviews (Village Voice and New Yorker) of Robert Walser’s The Assistant appeared this week;

And we posted our own reviews of Simenon’s The Engagement and Monzo’s The Enormity of the Tragedy

Issue 9 of Literal went online, as did excerpts from issue 4 of A Public Space, and the new Believer

Charles Simic was named poet laureate;

The Guardian continued its world tour in Ireland

and last, but definitely entertaining, Robert Olen Butler sent out a cry for help to everyone that wasn’t about the difficulties his wife has living in his impressive, Pulitzer-winning shadow.
