鈥淭eaching students how to teach music theory is especially fun,鈥� says Matthew BaileyShea, an associate professor at the University鈥檚 Eastman School of Music and in the College's Department of Music.

This past February, students from the University of Rochester and 33 other colleges and universities participated in the survey, which was organized by the Association of American Universities.

The annual award recognizes undergraduate students who excelled academically and in leadership roles during their first year at the College.

Seniors Melissa Wen, Nathan Nickerson, and Jarrod Young are this year's winners of the Wells Award, given each year to high-achieving students in the Hajim School of Engineering and Applied Sciences who also excel in the humanities.

The University鈥檚 Title IX Office has created a program where the valuable unused class time that results from a cancelled class can be turned into a workshop for students on sexual misconduct prevention.

Growing up in Uruguay Fernanda Sesto 鈥�23 was the only female student in her computer science-focused high school. At Rochester, she plans to continue using technology to tackle issues of social inequality.

Living in a shelter during parts of his high school years, Jafr猫 Chase 鈥�23E never stopped practicing the viola, and never stopped dreaming and working toward a better life.

Field hockey teammates Kate Kujawa 鈥�20 and Amanda Guido 鈥�20 have both been touched by suicide. Now the team is dedicating its September home game to remembering those lost and to raising awareness of support available for those who need help.

For first-generation college student Siera Sadowski 鈥�23, the financial freedom of a Handler Scholarship and the academic freedom of Rochester鈥檚 curriculum are opening doors.

The Department of Public Safety recently appointed Laura Johnson as the department鈥檚 first LGBTQ+ liaison, and Erin Vess as the new community resource officer.

Combining her life-long love for music with her interest in technology led Sanaa Finley 鈥�23 to feel 鈥渞ight at home鈥� at Rochester.
