Favorite University tradition?<\/strong> \u201cDandelion Day is really fun, but I loved the candlelight ceremony freshman year when I moved in.\u201d<\/p>\n

Favorite course?<\/strong> \u201cHitler\u2019s Germany and Post War Europe, both taught by Thomas Fleischman. Great teacher, awesome courses.\u201d<\/p>\n

What advice would you give to incoming students?<\/strong> \u201cRemember to have fun. School is super stressful and can become overwhelming. Find out what you\u2019re passionate about and don\u2019t be so stressed that you forget the other fun side of college. Be involved.\u201d<\/p>\n<\/div>\n

Making their mark: This is one in a series<\/a> of profiles celebrating members of Rochester\u2019s graduating class of 2018.<\/em><\/p>\n

As a six-foot-two center for the Rochester women\u2019s basketball team, Alexandra Leslie \u201918 was tasked with two jobs: score and rebound.<\/p>\n

She did both well enough to earn All-America honors all four seasons and finish all-time second in program history in points (1,848) and rebounds (992).<\/p>\n

Leslie\u2019s assists came off the court. In high school, she and her teammates awoke early each Christmas Eve morning in her hometown of Lancaster, Pennsylvania, and helped deliver 1,500 meals to low-income families. She also worked with special needs students at a pediatrics center. And in college she joined the University\u2019s St. Sebastian Society, sponsored by the Catholic Newman Community, and tutors students in the Rochester City School District each week.<\/p>\n

\u201cI\u2019ve always loved helping others,\u201d says Leslie, known as \u201cAl\u201d by friends and family. \u201cEven with school ending, I\u2019d love to find ways to keep helping others.\u201d<\/p>\n

Leslie will graduate with a bachelor\u2019s degree in business and hopes to land a job where her interpersonal skills will shine. Her dream is to work her way into a high leadership role in a company.<\/p>\n

Leslie learned about the University through her friend and former high school teammate Michelle Relin \u201916, who played basketball for one season at Rochester but made her mark as one of the school\u2019s greatest field hockey players.<\/p>\n

\u201cMichelle told me I should come to Rochester, and she told [women\u2019s basketball coach] Jim Scheible, \u2018You want this girl,\u2019\u200a\u201d Leslie says. \u201cI loved the campus when I visited. It\u2019s so beautiful. I still walk around the quads when I want to clear my head.\u201d<\/p>\n

Scheible knew Leslie was the real deal when he saw her play in high school, and she didn\u2019t disappoint at Rochester, ranking first or second in 10 career categories. \u201cI don\u2019t think I\u2019ve ever coached someone as poised and composed as Al,\u201d Scheible says. \u201cShe ended up being everything I hoped and more.\u201d<\/p>\n

Leslie led the Yellowjackets to the NCAA Division III Tournament three times, including spots in the national quarterfinals her sophomore and senior years. She twice was a finalist for the Jostens Trophy, awarded to a Division III women\u2019s player based on basketball ability, academic prowess, and community service.<\/p>\n

\u201cShe re-elevated our program back to the national stage and made everyone else better,\u201d Scheible says. \u201cShe\u2019s a once-in-a-generation player.\u201d<\/p>\n

After four grinding years of studying and basketball, Leslie plans to enjoy some time off before pursuing a career in business. \u201cMy mom is from Sweden, and they take a year off after high school and college,\u201d Leslie says. \u201cI\u2019m all for that.\u201d<\/p>\n

She knows one thing: whatever she winds up doing, community service will be in her game plan. \u201cIt\u2019s something I love,\u201d she says. \u201cAnd it\u2019s something that will always be part of my life.\u201d<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"
