Move-Out Programs

Two annual recycling initiatives that occur around campus move-out each spring

Moving out of campus housing? At the end of each academic year, the University offers two programs for students living on campus to offload household items in a responsible way: Move-out Cleanout and Dump & Run.

Move-Out Cleanout

Each spring around move-out time, look for collection bins typically located in the main entrance way of each residential building. You can donate:

  • Clothing and shoes: Large blue Goodwill collection boxes are located outside of each residential living area.
  • Unopened non-perishable food: Collection barrels are in the main entryway of each residence hall. Fraternity Quad residents can bring their goods to Sigma Epsilon House. The collection outside Hillside Market will benefit the UR Food Pantry.
  • Unopened new toiletries: Collection boxes are placed in the main entryway of each residence hall. Fraternity Quad residents can bring their goods to Sigma Epsilon House.
  • Electronics: Bring any data-storing devices to the in Rush Rhees Library. Label all other electronics with 鈥淩ecycle鈥� and bring to the Sage Art Center loading dock.

Dump & Run

Each spring, you can donate your unwanted household items for reuse next year. Acceptable items include:

  • Furniture and home goods: rugs, chairs, shelves, baskets
  • Working electronics: TVs, lamps, microwaves, power strips
  • Refrigerators
  • Other school or room supplies

Note: Non-approved appliances or items as detailed on the will not be accepted.

2026 move-out results

Efforts from Move-out Cleanout resulted in the collection of 17,111 pounds of clothing, donated to Goodwill and to Edison Tech High School; 1,862 pounds of food, which went to the University Food Pantry, Mt. Hope Family Center, and Open Door Mission; and 67 pounds of other items, which went back to the University or greater Rochester community.

The 2026 Dump & Run is estimated to have collected 1,000 pounds of material, which will go back to the student body in the fall semester.
